Stairs

Lila has found the stairs.

Right before she fell all the way over and cracked her head. I was too busy trying to get a picture to catch her. Bad Mommy!

This is the first house we've lived in with stairs. I am thinking it is going to be a pain in the butt.

I guess now I need to teach her how to sit back down. Right now she is just standing for as long as she can and then collapsing to the ground. Not so good or safe. Got to find the baby gates.

Attack of the Giant Lila

First, Jax wanted everyone to see his tower (Pardon the no shirt -- we call that the Blake:)

The kids were building with Lincoln Logs and Lila decided to get in on the action. She's been mobile for awhile, but I think she has figured out that she can actually get to what she wants. When she has a target, you cannot change her mind. This has been the first full day of her new skill and it is already driving me nuts.

So far today I have taken this out of her mouth:

1 army man
1 sucker wrapper
1 band aid (that she pulled off of her leg from her shots yesterday)
1 clothes pin
1 geotrax man
2 cheerios

&

3 pieces of paper that came unglued from Jax's homework.

I swear, our house is not a mess. She just has a knack for reaching under the couch and finding the smallest stuff possible. I'm trying to get the kids to understand they can't leave stuff out.

Don't even get me started on the door to Jax's room being left open. It is a straight flight of stairs down. I can picture her falling now. Actually, no I can't b/c I'm way to paranoid to let that happen (knock on wood, I know)

High School Musical Has Overtaken Our House!

The kids picked out their Halloween costumes last night and of course had to try them out immediately. Jax is going to be Batman, Sunny is Gabriella, and Lila is a Rockstar. Anyway, Sunny is super thrilled with herself and her new wig. I think she looks a lot like her cousin Maia (who has brown curly hair) when she is wearing her wig.

That's a lot of hair for such a little girl, don't you think?

Dancing

I hope her costume makes it until Halloween in one piece.

p.s. Lila is mad. Well not now, this was about 15 minutes ago. She's happy now and still playing on the floor. But, she was very mad that I was trying to take her picture. I kept sitting her up and scooting away to take the picture and she kept coming after me. When I wouldn't pick her up her feelings got hurt.

p.p.s For Jess. This is a quote from Sunny:

"My hair is black. Like Aunt Jess's. Do you like it? Aunt Jess had blonde and black. What happened to the blonde? I guess she cut it off. Yeah, that's what she did. Now we match black and black."

After which I reminded her that we do NOT, under any circumstances cut our hair. Even if we wish it was a different color. It was right around a year ago that she cut her hair b/c she wanted brown not blonde. Apparently the child has hair color issues. She doesn't understand that I would kill for fine blonde hair :)

Check Up

Lila had her 6 months check up today (she was 6 months on the 14th). She did great. She didn't freak out too much when she got her shots, and as soon as I picked her up she stopped crying. She's doing great!

13lbs 15oz = 3rd%
26.5" = 70th%
16" head = 5th%

So, seriously Aunt Jess, lets get started on her training for America's Next Top Model! I think she's got the right body type (and she loves to throw up --bad joke, sorry)

Jax at 6 months was 16 lbs 7 ozs
Sunny at 6 months was 14 lbs 7 oz

Seriously though, the doctor thinks she isn't gaining weight very fast b/c she is so active. He asked if she could sit well or crawl and when I said yes to both he told me they only see that about twice a year and b/c she is so active she is burning calories fast. That sounds like a good explanation to me. As long as she's healthy, I'm happy!

Sarah has a new favorite show

Good news everyone!! Sarah was watching fox tonight and she got was so excited to see this great new show. It is called Hole in the Wall , and large men had tight silver spandex looking uniforms on. I'm joking we actually thought this was pretty lame but a little entertaining, and a little strange. Take a peek for yourself if you haven't already. It is good for a laugh until it gets old.

6 Months

Lila was 6 months old on Sunday. Her check-up isn't until the end of the month, but I had to take her to the doctor today b/c she has been really sick this weekend. She has a pretty bad stomach virus, and when she started throwing up blood I took her right in. (Don't worry, not like red blood, but a little bit of brown --which means old blood). The doctor thinks she has torn the flap between her stomach and esophagus, or has torn the lining of her stomach and that is where the blood is coming from. She on prevacid (to reduce acid), zofran
(to stop the throwing up), andMaalox (to help heal her stomach). She's a little dehydrated from being sick all weekend, but the doctor said I was doing a good job keeping her hydrated with the pedialyte. Hopefully she'll turn the corner soon and get better.

So, she got weighed today and my guess was right on.

13 lbs 14 oz -- I think it's probably right around the 10th%

I measured her at home and I think she is between 25 1/2 and 26 inches. Not sure what percent that is, but both numbers seem to be following her growth curve well. I'll find out more at her real check-up I'm sure.

No wonder she still fits in 0-3 month clothes:)

Cloth Diapers

I mentioned in a previous post that we are clothing diapering Lila and I wanted to take some time and explain exactly how and what we are doing. This will probably be of no interest to 99% of the people who read our blog, but a couple people have expressed interest, so this is for them (and for me :). If you don't care, don't read. Don't worry, you won't hurt my feelings.

Well, before you skip over this entirely, at least look at all the cute pics of Lila in her cloth diapers!

She was really cranky when I took this. I was trying to get her laying on her belly looking sad b/c it was so cute. She apparently caught on to what I was doing and didn't want to cooperate. Every time I pushed her head down she popped back up and was trying to flip over. She thought she was pretty funny.

This is my whole cloth diapering stash. It's amazing for it to all be clean at one time (obviously that never happens), but Lila was sick this weekend so I got it all clean and organized.

I store it in the drawer that goes under her crib. This is only about half of our stuff. It doesn't all fit when it's clean (which like I said, doesn't really ever happen.

These are Bumgenius pocket diapers. They make up the majority of our diapers b/c they are pretty simple to use and don't ever leak. These are the ones we use when we are going out and about, and at night. These are waterproof (as are all the colored ones I have). The outside layer is made of PUL ( I can't remember what that stands for, but something like poly-?????, ????? and laminated :). Whatever it is, it doesn't leak.

The inside of the diaper is lined with suede cloth. Others I have are lined with fleece. This layer keeps the baby's skin dry and draws the liquid down into the diaper.

Here is the pocket opening. You stuff these with different types of inserts, depending on what you need. More stuffing for night time, less for day. Microfiber or hemp.

These are microfiber. They are very absorbent and come in different lengths and thicknesses.

All of my inserts. The tan ones are hemp. They are thinner than microfiber and more absorbent. I use them mostly for night time, or when we are going to church or out and I want her diaper to last longer.

These are called All In One diapers. Instead of a pocket to stuff, an absorbent insert is sewn directly into the diaper. They are easier for dads to use, but take longer to dry.

The insert is sewn into the back. I like these, but you can't leave them on a baby as long as a pocket diaper.

These are fitted diapers. They require a diaper cover b/c they are not waterproof. They are just flannel and cotton that has been sewn together so no folding is require.

These are prefolds. The white ones are Chinese, and the tan ones are Indian. These are what most people think of as burp cloths. You can use them for burp cloths, but you wouldn't want to use burp cloths from Target as diapers. They are not nearly as absorbent. These are diaper service quality and are much better.

With the prefolds, there several different ways to fold them. It's actually pretty easy. I bought a couple just to try, and ended up ordering more b/c I really like them. Especially for around the house. The purple thing is called a snappi. It is used instead of pins. It has little teeth that grip the cloth and you just stretch it across the baby. Super simple

Diaper covers that go over the fitteds and prefolds.

Cloth wipes are one of my favorite things. I used a special wipe mixture that I ordered online and make myself. I just put in several spray bottles and wet the wipes as needed. For my wipes I have a few that are hemp (the oval ones) but mostly I use baby wash cloths that I got on sale at Target.

My diaper pail. We keep the lid up though b/c the diapers don't smell. I'm a little freakish about rinsing them out before I put them in. You don't have to, but since I have a sink right here in my laundry room I always do.

Right before I did laundry. I have enough diapers to go about 3 days between loads (which is the most you would want to wait. Otherwise they would start to stink), but usually I wash every day and a half. I only do it this much though b/c it's really simple and I like to have all my diapers clean.

Finally, these are wetbags. This is how you take your cloth diapers out in public. I carry the big bag folded up in my diaper bag. When I change Lila out in public I just throw the wet diaper and wipes into the bag. It has a water proof liner call PUL on the inside. The you can just throw the bag in the washer with the diapers if it is dirty. The smaller bag is just for quick trips. It has a diaper and wipe inside and a pocket on the outside that I put my keys and phone in. If I need to change her I can just put the clean diaper on and stick the wet on in the bag. This one is also waterproof.

Wow, this has gotten long, but I wanted to show exactly how it's done. Ryan was not really on board with this idea at first. When I was pregnant I kept talking about it and he said "NO WAY". I dropped it, but then in August decided I really wanted to do it and he could just deal with it. He agreed to let me buy two diapers to try, and then we could see what we wanted to do.

Turns out he loves it as much as I do. It is so much simpler than I ever thought. The laundry isn't that much extra work, and the diapers work great. They rarely leak, and if they do, it is b/c we left them on her for too long. Same as with disposables.

Warning: Poop Talk Ahead

Oh, a final word about poop. No big deal. If you're breastfeeding, you actually don't even have to rinse the diapers. The poop is water soluble and will wash out by itself. However, I would never do that b/c I can't stand the idea of poop in my washer. As far as poop goes, Lila doesn't go very often (tmi, I know) and when she does it solid. So, I just dump it in the toilet. Then I rinse the diaper in the laundry sink and throw the diaper in the pail. So simple.

If cloth diapering sounds interesting or like something you might want to try, I would really encourage you to get a sample pack and see what works for you. I have ordered from several website and these are all great.

Football anyone?

(Warning not for those who dislike football) I am sure Sarah will get back to the other stuff after she sees this post. If you are a non-bcs college football fan, then yesterday was a wonderful day. I am mainly writing this for Josh and his negative opinion about BYU football. Lets talk about what happened yesterday. BYU finally put together the game I have been waiting for. I could feel it for the last couple years, it just wasn't happening yet. Was that UCLA team the same team who beat Tennessee? Well I don't need to say more about it, the final score says enough. Also, the MWC beat the PAC-10 in every match-up. Even the lowly UNLV rebels beat #15 ranked Arizona State. Good stuff. Now lets talk about the mighty SEC. For awhile I did believe they were the best conference in the country but even now I am having second thoughts. Miss. State vs. Auburn, final score 3-2. Boring!! Auburn is ranked #9. Lets not forget that Miss. State is bad, and lost to Lous. Tech a few weeks ago. Also Kentucky barely squeaked by Middle Tenn. State. Who? They should paste a team like that. They were a few inches from losing. Georgia who I do think is strong defensively, barely survived against an unimpressive South Carolina team. The SEC has teams with good defense, but not much offense. I think against a team like USC, the SEC would falter bad. But they rarely play any tough out-of-conference games. Georgia is playing Arizona State next week, I can't wait to see what happens in that one. I really believe that BYU's offense could put up major points against anyone in the country right now. Max Hall is one of the top 5 QB's in the nation. If something will cost them it will be their defense, against a team with good speed. But for now things are looking good for them to crash the BCS malarky. I can't wait for the next few weeks to unfold. And hope they get a shot at some overrated team.

My top ten right now
1.USC
2.Oklahoma
3.Missouri
4.LSU
5.Florida
6.Georgia
7.Texas
8.Texas Tech
9.BYU
10.Bama (I guess) Wish they would come play in Provo, but they backed out a few years ago.

Here We Go Again :(

Yep, cold and flu season.

I'm dreading it, and for anyone who followed all my rants about my kids being sick last year, you probably know what I'm going to say next. I HATE SICK PEOPLE!! Unfortunately they are unavoidable with Jax in Kindergarten and Sunny in Preschool. That said, Lila is battling a cold right now, which while annoying, isn't that big a deal. Jax on the other hand has been sick for two weeks. He had been off his asthma meds and we thought he might be outgrowing it, but we were wrong. So, after a long talk with his Dr. he is on meds again, and might need a breathing machine (can't remember the real word right now.)

I don't want to offend anyone, and this isn't directed at any one in particular, so please no one get their feelings hurt. I just want to remind everyone that what is a simple cold for most kids is very dangerous to Jackson. Although his heart is doing well, he will always be at risk for sickness and infection. Because of his leaky heart valves, any infection he gets could potentially go to his heart and cause major problems for him. I know as he gets older it is hard to believe that he has something wrong with him b/c he seems so healthy, but he does. His heart will NEVER be normal.

Secondly, his asthma is worse than we originally thought. A little cold can cause major flare-ups that require steroids and breathing treatments for him. It could also cause him to have to miss many days of school, which obviously we don't want. Last December he missed more days of preschool than he made it too, which is really unfortunate.

We are taking as many precautions as we can for him (well all our children b/c we don't want any of them to be sick and spread it to the others). We have the kids change clothes immediately after school or church and wash their hands. We try to avoid indoor crowds (where germs are likely to be spread). We practice good (freakish) hand washing habits and don't share any drinks or food. The kids also take special immune system enhancing vitamins (don't know if they work or not, but I figure it couldn't hurt :).

What I ask of you is this:

1. Please don't send your child(ren) over to my house sick. Yes, I realize it's only a little cold that's going around but please.... It is so serious for my son.

2. Please understand if we are unable to go, do, attend, or be a part of an event b/c we consider it to be a danger to our children. We are following Dr.'s orders.

3. If we are going to the same place as you, please let us know if anyone in your family is sick or has been sick in the last few days. We don't expect you to stay home, but we need to know so we can make the decision if it would be okay for our family to be around the germs, or if we need to skip the event.

We would really appreciate if you could help us out with this. I know it sounds a bit over the top, but after discussing it with the doctor we feel that it will be beneficial to our family as we try to keep our children as healthy as possible.

Thanks.

Do They Look Alike?

I found this outfit in the closet today. I bought it for Sunny when she was a baby and saved it for Lila. I remembered I had pics of Sunny wearing it so I decided to take some of Catey and see how alike, or different they look.

So the first two are Lila today. She'll be 6 months old in 3 days.

I like this picture b/c it reminds me how cute she can be. She is sick with a pretty yucky cold right now and she is so cranky. It is driving me nuts. She stopped complaining long enough for a few pictures though.

Here is Sunny at almost 6 months old (maybe a little younger than Lila). This was when we lived down in Springville.

I don't think they look that much alike. Sunny had more hair. Although Lila has a decent amount, it's really light so it doesn't show up well for pictures. Plus I didn't spike it up this morning like I usually do.

Lila also has the super pokey (is that a word?) Jackson ears. Sunny was lucky enough to be spared those. Although I think it won't be as bad for a girl b/c her hair will hide them a bit.

Lila can sit up alone, which apparently Sunny couldn't ( I would've have know if I didn't have the picture of the Boppy helping her sit). I did sit Lila in front of the wall though, just so she would sit longer before she fell. She's pretty steady usually.

These two are nothing alike. Sunny was the most laid back baby ever. She was just along for the ride. Super quiet, didn't need much attention, etc. She also wasn't in a hurry to grow up. She didn't crawl until almost 9 months. She was happy to sit and watch her big brother.

As we all know, Lila is incredibly demanding. She needs lots of attention, kisses, hugs, funny faces, and so on. She can never get enough, and she is in such a hurry to get bigger. Sometimes I like it, and sometimes I just want her to stop and be my baby a little bit longer.

High School Musical

A couple of weeks ago we borrowed High School Musical Sing Along for our Wii. We have never seen it or heard the songs, but Sunny and I got into it pretty quickly. Sunny was so sad when we had to return the game so after her first day of preschool I took her to the store and bought the cd for her. She was thrilled. This is her posing with the poster that came inside. She couldn't decide which side she liked better.

Troy and Gabriella. She is always Gabriella when we sing.

Some of her awesome dance moves.

When we got home from the store she shut herself in her room with the cd player on and the music turned up. She didn't want to be disturbed. Apparently she was practicing.

The cutest thing is that she memorized all the dance moves the characters did on the Wii. She is seriously good. She got kinda frustrated trying to teach the moves to me (I'm a BAD dancer).

Being Sharpay (which is rare b/c she prefers Gabriella).
